Comedy Takes Center Stage in "Island Shorts"

Six short plays by writers on Orcas and San Juan Islands have been packaged into a sparkling night of comedy at San Juan Community Theatre, with six performances beginning Saturday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. There are new voices in this pack of playwrights, and new faces to the stage, as well as bold performances by more experienced actors and authors. All told, there are more than 50 people involved in these productions.

Each of the six performances in the Gubelman Theatre will include new works written by Al Bentley, Chris DeStaffany, Kathleen Kaska, Wendy E. Shepard, Kristin Ulsund (Orcas), and Joy Van Camp.

In addition, the performances on March 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. March 21 at 2:00 pm, and March 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. will each include the staged reading of two plays in progress, with different playwrights featured each night.

The staged readings on March 19 will be works by Ernest Pugh and Jacki Altier. On March 20, plays by Greg Sutherland and Roxanne Dunn will be read.

The March 21 performance will include works by Mark DayVincent and Susan M. Wingate.

On March 25 you'll see plays by Yvonne Beckham and Michael Close / Clark Gilbert. And on March 26, the staged readings will be by playwrights Eva Wingren and Charlie Bodenstab.

The performance is sponsored by RE/MAX San Juan Island. Tickets are $10 for all seats, with $5 Student RUSH available one hour before each performance. Due to the limited seating capacity of the Gubelman Theatre, advance purchase is recommended. The SJCT Box Office is open Tues.-Sat., and one hour before the show. Call 378.3210.
